What is self advocacy?

Self-advocacy is the ability to speak up for yourself and the things that are important to you. The goal of self-advocacy is for YOU to decide what you want then develop and carry out a plan to help you get it. It does not mean you can’t get help if you need or want it, it just means that you are making the choices and you have to be responsible for the choices you make.

Why is it being run?

DAIS has always supported self advocacy as a means by which people with a disability can, as much as possible:
  • Achieve their rights
  • Have their needs met
  • Feel a sense of achievement and empowerment
  • Be fully included in community life and the work force.
The program is designed to provide skills to people with a disability so they can effectively self-advocate and attain the above benefits.

Who is it for?

The DAIS Self Advocacy Training program is designed for people with a disability, their carers and parents.

Who is involved?

Training sessions are delivered by DAIS staff and occasional guest speakers.

The workshops have a maximum of 6 people per session to allow full participation for all participants. The Program is FREE.
